There is no doubt in understanding why studio produced music is so much more polished. I’ve collaborated with a lot of great people and learned a lot about the craft of laying down tracks while listening to a click track. Everything is planned and charted and in the end the artists end up with a sculpture of a song that needs just a little chiseling and sanding before it’s introduced to the world. I really enjoy the process.
My album “The Ghost of Brian Craig: Live in Bend 2022” is not a studio album. It is a bit loose on tempo and there are some minor flaws here and there with the performance or recording. To me, the importance of the album is the energy found during live performances and capturing a moment we have all experience during the recovery of live music at the tail-end of the pandemic lock downs and masking in 2022. These are recordings of times when both the audience and me, as the performer, were enjoying a moment with each other; and it felt like we resurrected what I call “The Ghost” of live music.
Every track on the album I experienced a magical moment with the audience. They were intoxicating times during the performance that really felt great. It seemed that there was something in the room or venue that made the moment very special. The songs, themselves, are good also - not perfect like a studio recorded product - but something I’m proud of.
As for plans - The journey of recording will continue with another edition of “The Ghost of Brian Craig” in 2023 that will reach beyond Bend and go to incredible places thanks to The No Limits Stage. On that album I hope to visit new places and perform eleven new tracks Who knows where we will end up. Later in 2024 I would like to go back to the traditional studio with session artists and record the most popular songs. The end result might end up to be a vinyl box set and maybe with even a film of the entire project. Who know?
