Over the last week or so I’ve been really focusing on dialing in the sound EQ and levels for my upcoming live show and recordings from those live shows.
It’s a unique challenge to EQ each instrument properly, especially with me who isn’t a sound engineer. My biggest take-away is you don’t want to add highs, mids or lows when first dialing in the sound. If it sounds too, “tinny” reduce the highs - if it sounds too, “muddy” reduce the mids and lows. After that bring up what you want to accentuate for each instrument.
I’m adding a new layer of complexity to my sound by adding keyboard padding from my trusty iPhone and garage band. I know, both of those sound really cheesy but it’s a step into a new world that I’ve always wanted to include. Honestly, I would rather have an experimental collaborator with me on the journey with real tools of mind-bending stratospheric sounds, but I’m just a middle aged rock and roll man in a room with a ton of inspiration. Strange….
