In my early years of playing live music I tended to really play super fast with a pronounced beginning and ending of a song. Most of it was nerves that adjusted my internal click too fast. I thought of the songs as individual pieces all different from the other song and not the entire production.
Another thing I did was I broke up my music with a break in the middle and put on some music from another streaming it my iPhone onto my PA while I got a beer and prepared for the next set. I noticed that a lot of people would settle up their tab and leave during this break. Also some of the music I played during my set break was that of a full band which immediately stepped on the solo acoustic music vibe I worked to create the first hour. Believe it or not - people intentionally plan to go out to listen to solo piano or guitar singer/songwriters and if they wanted to go out to a full band they’d probably have done that instead.
Last fall I started focusing on eliminating my break and play a continuous 2-hour set. I learned right away that I could blow right through my songs - leaving me no option but to repeat a song - which is a big show no-no. This forced me to sloooooooow down and open up the bridge portions of each song to include a pleasant rhythm and begin experimenting with new leads on both the harmonica and guitar. I also threw in a drum pad that allows me to tap the beat of a tambourine, shaker or a kick drum.
Two things immediately happened - I’ve been able to easily perform a continuous 120 minute show and the audience sticks around while getting into the groove and talking with their friend. I noticed that the songs become more fluid and the show becomes a continuous experience rather than a bunch of songs put together on a set list.
I do have to tell you that it is a challenge to perform 120 minutes straight - especially when it’s hot outside. I needed to train up a bit, kind of like a runner, to get comfortable playing that long. But, it’s pretty awesome to watch people sway to the beat of my guitar and tambourine sounds and stick around. Music is such an amazing and never ending learning experience.
Groove is such an important element - no more out of control tempo and an enjoyable environment with people sticking around.
